Earl Beatty's Bordenball Achievements!

This year, for the first time, Earl Beatty had a Bordenball team.

Even though it was a new sport for our school, we had an amazing and enthusiast group of girls come out to represent our community. Working hard three days a week after school, the girls came together as a team, where hard work and a positive attitude were the defining characteristic.

At the tournament the girls showed class and determination playing against teams older, bigger, and more experienced. With an attitude that couldn't be beat they fought hard and won their first game ever. Even though the other two games weren't as successful, the team showed sportsmanship that made the coaches proud and left people commenting
positively on our school and our team.

Over all it was an excellent and successful year and we're already looking forward to 2014.
Way to go!

QSP - Get Those Orders In!

Thank you so much for your support of Earl Beatty's QSP campaign!
We only need $1,500 more in orders to reach our $16,000 target!

We have extended the deadline until tomorrow just in case anyone has any last minute magazines they want to order or renew (prizes will also still be available until tomorrow).

So far, your fundraising has brought in over $14,500 in online and offline orders!  We are so close to our goal of $16,000 in magazine sales which will mean over $5,000 for our school. Magazines can be ordered all year long (and we will continue to reach or exceed our goal), but the great prizes are only available until tomorrow.

Thanks again for your support!

AstroTurf at Earl Beatty???

At the October 10th EBSAC meeting we learned that Earl Beatty is one of several schools that is being considered by the TDSB to have the field area inside our track replaced by AstroTurf.

This information was delivered verbally by our Trustee, Sheila Cary-Meagher. The council has formed an “AstroTurf Fact Finding Committee” made up of parent volunteers to research and gather information such as why the current grass has had problems growing in the past, cost and kind of AstroTurf being proposed, other school’s experiences with AstroTurf, alternative solutions, along with expert environmental opinions on the topic.

When all the information is gathered, we will have an open meeting to discuss the findings and voice opinions with teachers, community centre staff, day care centre staff, parents, and the community at large.

The Toronto Star has been in contact with EBSAC as well as several parents directly in search of individual opinions on the matter. The following statement was delivered via email to the two reporters who inquired: "The Earl Beatty Council found out about the TDSB's plans for Astroturf at our school from our Trustee at our meeting on 10 Oct. An Astro Turf Fact Finding Committee has been set up. No discussion will begin until the facts on Astroturf and alternatives are gathered."

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us and we will put you in touch with our “Astro Turf Fact Finding Committee”.

Click here for background information on the TDSB's plans, including some pros and cons of turf fields and the expected timeline :

The AstroTurf Fact Finding Committee will be presenting the information they gather at our monthly meetings (the next one is scheduled for 21 November, 6:30 pm).

Seasonal Changes in the Earl Beatty School Yard!

Here is a post from Kindergarten teacher Ms. David on a great class project that gets her kids outdoors and learning from the natural environment at Earl Beatty!

The students in our class expressed curiosity towards the changes that are occurring in our schoolyard. We decided that we would choose a “classroom” tree and watch how it changes throughout the year.

We went outside and walked around our schoolyard looking for the perfect tree. One student reminded the class that we need to choose a tree with “soft” leaves and not “piney” leaves. She explained that “evergreen trees are always green and will not change much”.

Students finally decided they wanted to observe 3 trees in our schoolyard:

Tree One:

Tree Two:

Tree Three:

After we decided on our 3 classroom trees, the students recorded their observations on their clipboards.

Students will continue observing their three classroom trees without the year.
We look forward to seeing how these trees change as the school year progresses!

Me to We at Earl Beatty

This year a group of dedicated Grade 6 and 7 students have joined the club Me to We. Me to We, in association with Free the Children, aims to empower youth to create change. By joining Me to We, students have committed to supporting at least one local and one international cause.

International Cause: Sierra Leone
The members of Me to We have chosen to adopt a village in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone has been devastated by years of civil war, and much of the infrastructure including schools, homes, medical and water facilities were destroyed. By adopting a village in Sierra Leone, Free the Children will build schools, train teachers, build hand pumps & water stations, provide water & sanitation education, distribute bed nets etc. Please stay tuned for activities that the students will be initiating to support a village in Sierra Leone.

Local Cause: The Daily Food Bank
This year, the first initiative of our Me to We group will be a local one. The program we are currently running is We Scare Hunger – a food drive supporting the Daily Food Bank that serves some people in our immediate community.

Did you know that 38% of people who use food banks are youth? Or that food bank use has increased by 20% in the past ten years? Did you know that 1 in 5 parents don’t eat to ensure their children have enough to eat?

Students are asked, if they are able, to bring in non-perishable food items (pasta, rice, canned fruit/vegetables, canned soup, baby formula etc). This program will run from October 8th – November 8th. Students who bring in at least one non-perishable item will be welcome to participate in hat day (date to be announced).

Thank you for your support,

From the Me to We Members

Safe Welcome Program Coming to Earl Beatty

The Ontario Ministry of Education has funded a new initiative called the Safe Welcome Program. This program consists of installing a buzzer system to the main entry doors of the school.

Starting Monday October 7 all doors will be locked by 9 a.m.
The new buzzer system is now installed on the Woverleigh Avenue entrance.
Anyone trying to enter the school after 9 a.m. will need to buzz the office, identify themselves, and state the purpose of their visit to the school. After gaining entry, visitors must report directly to the office.

In the future Beatty Buddies Daycare will have its own buzzer system, but in the meantime all visitors should use the existing system.
